MR-2 Terrain Mapping and In-Ground Mine Detection

Description

ESI MR2 Demining & Hazardous Materials Handling Robot

Combining the expertise of ESI in the field of robotics and the experience of Defence Research Establishment Suffield (DRES) in landmine detection and neutralization, ESI has developed a unique demining mobile robot - MR-2.

The MR-2 is an off-road mobile robot designed to detect landmines, including those with minimal metal content, and UXO. When equipped with an additional arm and vision system, the MR-2 performs neutralization of landmines under the supervision of remotely located operator.

The MR-2 is an autonomous mine detection system that operates at high speed with minimum logistic burden and zero hazard level. The MR-2 is designed to search for mines on terrains with rich vegetation stones, sand, puddles and various obstacles.

The MR-2 uses only one metal detector and adaptively follows the terrain and avoids obstacles.

The MR-2 is a modular system comprising of:

  • Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV)
  • Control Unit (CU)
  • Robotic Arm for Scanning (RAS)
  • Laser-Range-Camera (LRC)
  • Metal Detector (MD), and
  • Arm for neutralization (optional).
