HCL Hybrid Communication Link

The HCL is applicable to the MR and LMA offered by ESI, as well as to any other commercial mobile robot. It provides an extended range of communication, in particular in underground garages and other enclosed built structures where wireless communication is not effective.

Purpose

The goal of a communication system is to allow controlling the robot reliably while providing a safe standoff distance between the operator and the danger area. Current mobile robots use only one form of communication system at a time, either cable or wireless RF. Cable system provides very reliable communication, but impairs the movement of the robot in tight spaces, or when the robot is moving repeatedly forward and backward, and around buildings. Wireless RF system allows the robot to move freely, but the communication is not always reliable because of electromagnetic interference. This situation is particularly noticeable in video communication.

The Hybrid Communication Link (HCL) enhances the communication between Robot and Control Station. The HCL utilizes the best features of both systems to increase the reliability and range of communication. The system uses Wireless RF communication between the Robot and a Communication Relay Module (CRM) platform, and Cable between the CRM Module and the Control Station.

ESI MR-5 Hybrid Communication Link

To take advantage of the HCL, the user needs to acquire the CRM platform. The platform is either an additional mobile robot with minor retrofits to allow it to operate as a CRM, or a specially designed remote control platform that carries at least driving mechanism, driving camera, surveillance pan-and-tilt camera on an articulated boom, two-way audio equipment, and motorized cable winding. The Communication Relay Module has a transmitter/receiver that allows communication with the robot.
